Samsung drops high bitrate option for 8K videos on Galaxy S23 Ultra

The Samsung Galaxy S23 Ultra boasts an exceptional camera system, which is one of its key selling points.

This device is equipped with a quad-camera setup, including a 200-megapixel wide camera, a 10-megapixel periscope telephoto lens, a 10-megapixel telephoto lens, and a 12-megapixel ultrawide camera.

With this impressive camera system, the phone is capable of recording 8K videos at either 24fps or 30fps. However, Samsung has quietly removed a feature that allowed users to increase the bitrate of 8K videos for better quality. This alteration was initially reported by PiunikaWeb, through AndroidAuthority.

The Galaxy S23 Ultra initially launched with an option to enable “High bitrate videos” in the camera settings. This feature increased the bitrate of 8K videos from 80Mbit/s to around 200 Mbit/s, resulting in larger file sizes but also more detailed videos. However, it has been reported that these high-bitrate videos were not smooth and had stutters and jerks. As a result, with the July update for the S23 series, Samsung has deactivated the high bitrate feature.

Various owners of the Galaxy S23 Ultra have confirmed on platforms like Reddit and Twitter that the high bitrate option is no longer available after installing the update. Samsung has not provided any official statement regarding the change, and there was no prior mention of it before the update was released. It’s worth noting that users cannot revert to the previous firmware version to regain access to high-bitrate videos.

Currently, it remains uncertain whether Samsung will reintroduce the high bitrate option for 8K videos on the Galaxy S23 Ultra in the future.
