Sam Heughan Reflects on Revolution’s Disruption of Families

STARZ’s critically acclaimed series, “Outlander,” has become known for its captivating storytelling that intertwines with significant historical events. From the battle of Culloden to the experiences of World War II nurse Claire (played by Caitriona Balfe), the show has consistently flirted with historical accuracy. In its latest season, “Outlander” delves into the depths of the American Revolutionary War, a conflict that will not only tear the British Empire from its American colonies but also create a heartbreaking rift between a father and his son.

In the recent episode titled “Singapore,” we witness protagonist Jamie (portrayed by Sam Heughan), his determined wife Claire, and their loyal allies fleeing from Fort Ticonderoga as the British forces advance. War is a familiar concept to the Fraser family, as they have faced its wrath numerous times throughout their tumultuous journey. Heughan reflects on Jamie’s character, stating, “He’s been through many wars. He’s faced history.” Jamie and Claire have made attempts in the past to alter the course of history, but in this instance, their efforts prove futile. They find themselves caught in the eye of the storm, facing the biggest hurricane they’ve ever encountered—the War of Independence.

Jamie’s unwavering commitment to protecting his family has always been a driving force in his life. However, the American Revolution will test the limits of this commitment. Heughan admits, “They’re trying to protect their family, the people they care for the most, and the people Jamie is responsible for. It’s overwhelming.” As the war unfolds, it will inevitably bring Jamie face to face with his son, William Ransom (played by Charles Vandervaart). William, having separated from the Hunter siblings, is destined to join the British army. Vandervaart describes William as someone with strong morals and ingrained ideas from his upbringing in England, making it challenging for him to abandon his allegiance.

The upcoming season of “Outlander” will tie up loose ends before the war takes full hold. Jamie may find himself in a heart-wrenching situation, forced to confront his own son on the opposing side of the battlefield—a circumstance he swore never to encounter. With William unaware of their true parentage, this war will force him to confront a different reality. Vandervaart reveals that William feels a deep sense of patriotism and readiness to fight, but his naivety stems from never witnessing the true horrors of war before. The audience will witness the evolution of William’s character as he navigates through this tumultuous period. Vandervaart ominously warns, “You’ll feel worse for him later on. It doesn’t get better.”

As “Outlander” continues to explore the intricacies of history, the impending conflict of the American Revolutionary War will undoubtedly test the strength of familial bonds, putting love, loyalty, and personal convictions to the ultimate test.
