Acclaimed filmmaker Nia DaCosta made a notable impact on Hollywood with the release of her debut film, “Little Woods,” in 2018. In the article, she delves into the valuable advice she received from “Black Panther” director Ryan Coogler, which she initially struggled to grasp.
DaCosta shared her experience:
“The best advice I got was from Ryan Coogler, but it didn’t resonate until after we finished filming. He said, ‘Just be yourself.’ Initially, I didn’t see the significance in his words and dismissed it as common knowledge. However, I later realized that he meant there is no need to engage in political games or pretend to be someone you’re not. They chose you for who you are, so embrace your authenticity and bring it to the table.”
The talented writer/director also discussed additional lessons she learned while working on “The Marvels”:
“What I discovered throughout the filmmaking process is that trust, effective communication, and setting aside one’s ego are fundamental aspects of directing. It is equally important to acknowledge what you don’t know. One wonderful aspect of working with Marvel is that they encourage you to reach out to other Marvel film directors for guidance. I received invaluable advice, and everyone was incredibly generous.”
We eagerly anticipate DaCosta’s contribution to the Marvel Cinematic Universe, hoping that it will bring a new level of quality to the franchise which has faced challenges in phases 4 and 5. There is no doubt that her unique perspective will enrich the world of comic book cinema.
