‘Riverdale’ Season 7 Neglected the Highlight of the ’50s Storyline

The CW’s hit show Riverdale has gained a reputation for its unpredictable nature and sudden changes in direction. Unfortunately, this has been a major turn-off for viewers throughout its seven-season run. In Season 7, the most promising aspect of the premiere episode was abruptly dropped, leaving fans disappointed. The message that Angel Tabitha left Jughead, “Bend towards justice,” was seemingly cut without explanation. To understand the context, let’s rewind a bit.

In Riverdale Season 6, a demon named Percival Pickens arrived from the supernatural dimension of Rivervale, bringing with him supernatural abilities for the characters. Betty could see auras, Jughead could hear thoughts, and Tabitha had the power to manipulate time. This was crucial in their mission to stop Percival, who had set Bailey’s Comet on a collision course with the town. Despite their efforts, they failed to save the town and were sent back to the 1950s by Tabitha to find a solution.

In the Season 7 premiere, Jughead was the only one with memories intact, and he desperately tried to pass on Tabitha’s message. However, he eventually lost his memories as well. Since then, the message has been completely forgotten and ignored.

This missed opportunity has had a negative impact on the show. The storylines surrounding Ethel and Cheryl, Toni, Kevin, and Clay seemed to align with Tabitha’s message but were ultimately dropped and overshadowed by unrelated plotlines.

By abandoning Tabitha’s message, Riverdale feels directionless and pointless. The characters’ journey to protect their town and rebuild their lives has been thrown off track, as they are now stuck in the 1950s with no apparent way back. It would have been interesting to explore the societal changes from the ’50s to the present day, which would have been timely and relevant. Furthermore, Tabitha’s character has been poorly handled, with her connection to Jughead forgotten and replaced by a different version of herself.

Even if the message resurfaces in the final episodes of the series, there simply isn’t enough time left to delve into its complexities and give it the attention it deserves. Ultimately, Riverdale has done a disservice to its own potential by sidelining Tabitha’s message and leaving fans feeling unsatisfied.
