Revealing the Dark Side of AI in ‘Mission: Impossible’

The public’s consciousness has been permeated by the looming threat of artificial intelligence in recent years. With the emergence of advanced A.I. systems like Midjourney and ChatGPT, concerns about the future of humanity and technology are being raised on a daily basis as these systems continue to evolve. The entertainment industry is also incorporating this issue into its narratives, as evidenced by the upcoming release of Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One, which delves into the topic of A.I. Collider’s Steve Weintraub sat down with director Christopher McQuarrie to discuss how the film ended up focusing on this timely threat.

After the success of Mission: Impossible – Fallout, which set a high bar for action and storytelling with its nuclear threat backdrop, McQuarrie and the crew were faced with the challenge of finding new territory to explore in the franchise. As the sixth film in the series, the director turned to technology to give Tom Cruise’s character, Ethan Hunt, a challenge unlike anything he had faced before. Although the discussions about A.I. were ahead of their time, the Dead Reckoning team was already envisioning this futuristic threat during the early stages of brainstorming for the sequel.

McQuarrie emphasized the serendipity of releasing Dead Reckoning at a time when the A.I. revolution is in full swing and society is grappling with the potential consequences of this technology. He compared the film’s relevance to Cold War films, which tapped into familiar fears of world war and nuclear destruction to resonate with audiences. When pitching the idea to Cruise, McQuarrie acknowledged that a few years ago, the concept might have been too intellectual for most viewers. However, with the changing landscape, he sought to tap into the anxiety surrounding technology and provide a cathartic experience for the audience, much like how 1986’s Top Gun offered a sense of relief during the Cold War era.

In Dead Reckoning, Hunt is pitted against an A.I. weapon that poses a threat to humanity as a whole. He must confront his past adversaries and race against time to prevent the weapon from falling into the wrong hands. As he grapples with a powerful new enemy, Hunt is also forced to confront his own history, making him question the importance of this mission compared to his personal relationships. Despite the seemingly insurmountable odds and death-defying stunts he faces throughout the Mission: Impossible films, Cruise’s character always emerges victorious. McQuarrie wants Dead Reckoning to provide a sense of relief from the mounting stress associated with technology.

While the first installment of Dead Reckoning addresses A.I. fears, McQuarrie teased that the second part, which has been in development for some time, would delve even deeper into these anxieties. He hinted at mind-bending concepts that would leave audiences astounded and unsettled. The director and co-writer Erik Jendresen have been working on both films for a while, and their prescient take on A.I. in Part Two is bound to leave viewers spellbound.

Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One hits theaters on July 12. Be sure to watch the trailer below and stay tuned for our full interview with Christopher McQuarrie.
