Retrospective Book Commemorates 35 Years of ‘Pet Sematary’

Stephen King remains incredibly popular, with recent adaptations of his horror works like “The Boogeyman” and “Doctor Sleep” reminding audiences of his devilish storytelling abilities. However, the 1980s was considered the golden era for King adaptations, and one film in particular stood out: “Pet Sematary”. Based on King’s beloved 1983 novel, the film was ahead of its time, exploring disturbing themes surrounding death and showing that even children were not safe. As “Pet Sematary” approaches its 35th Anniversary in 2024, a new behind-the-scenes book has been announced to commemorate the terrifying occasion.

According to Bloody Disgusting, the book titled “Hollywood Comes to Maine: Revisiting Stephen King’s Pet Sematary” will be released next year. This book, from the same team behind the documentary “Unearthed and Untold: The Path to Pet Sematary”, will serve as an updated and expanded companion piece to the documentary. It will feature new interviews with the cast and crew, newly discovered production archives, essays from prominent writers, filmmakers, and film historians, and even cut content from the film. The team behind the book emphasized the regional significance of “Pet Sematary” in New England, as it was the first King adaptation to be shot entirely in his home state. They aim to tell the stories of locals who played a role in making this enduring horror cult classic.

The writer, John Campopiano, expressed his enthusiasm for revisiting the world of “Pet Sematary” and collaborating with the team to create this comprehensive coffee table book. He highlighted the personal connection to the subject matter and the opportunity to delve deeper into the history of regional New England filmmaking.

Accompanying the announcement is an image of Stephen King himself as a minister, adding a visual element to the excitement surrounding the book.

“Pet Sematary” holds a lasting legacy in the horror genre. Released in 1989, it resonated with audiences in a unique and chilling way. Filmed in Maine, King’s home state, the story of a grieving family’s desperate attempt to bring their deceased son back to life struck a nerve. The film’s atmospheric setting, powerful performances, and memorable quotes contribute to its enduring popularity. The legacy of “Pet Sematary” continues with the 2019 remake, which also garnered critical acclaim.

As we approach the 35th anniversary of “Pet Sematary”, fans can immerse themselves in the world of the film through the upcoming behind-the-scenes book. For those eager to revisit the movie, it is available on 4K Blu-ray and streaming on Paramount+.
