Retro-Bit announces physical Genesis re-releases of Sol-Deace and El Viento in the coming year

Rediscovering Retro Classics: Sol-Deace and El Viento Return to Sega Genesis/Mega Drive

Retro-Bit has exciting news for retro gaming enthusiasts! They have recently announced the re-release of two lesser-known titles, Sol-Deace and El Viento, for the Sega Genesis/Mega Drive. Pre-orders for these nostalgic gems are now open.

Sol-Deace originally debuted in Japan in 1990 as Sol-Feace on the Sharp X68000. It was later ported to the Sega CD worldwide and the Genesis in North America. The nomenclature of “Sol-Feace” and “Sol-Deace” for the respective versions remains a mystery. Despite not finding any actual definitions for these terms, it adds an amusing curiosity to the game titles.

No matter the name, Sol-Deace/Feace is a horizontal shoot-’em-up developed by Wolf Team. While some have described it as “typical,” it is praised for its visually appealing aesthetics. Although I haven’t played it myself, the Retro-Bit reproduction has certainly piqued my interest.

A Unique Side-Scrolling Adventure: El Viento

El Viento is another noteworthy title from Wolf Team, released in 1991. This sidescrolling action game stands out for its female protagonist. It is the first installment in a trilogy that includes only El Viento and Earnest Evans. While some consider it a bit quirky yet enjoyable, recent reviews have been largely positive.

Both Sol-Deace and El Viento hold a certain level of obscurity, making their revival by Retro-Bit all the more exciting. Additionally, these games have become quite expensive on the collector’s market, making the re-release even more valuable. As a fan of early Genesis aesthetics, I am seriously considering adding them to my collection.

Each game comes with a slipcover, clamshell case, Genesis/Mega Drive cartridge, and manual. Pre-orders are available on Retro-Bit’s store until July 30, priced at $54.99 USD each. The expected shipping date is in the fourth quarter of 2023.
