Resident Evil Village Abandons Denuvo DRM on Steam

Capcom recently made a discreet move by removing Denuvo DRM protection from their popular game, Resident Evil Village. In the latest update, the controversial anti-tampering technology was eliminated, and it is no longer mentioned on the game’s Steam store page. Denuvo DRM, which aims to prevent piracy, has often been criticized for negatively impacting game performance on PC. This issue was particularly evident in Resident Evil Village, prompting Capcom to finally remove the DRM almost two years after the game’s release. Interestingly, pirates had already managed to crack the game earlier in 2021, providing a version that performed significantly better than the authentic copy.

According to a report by DSOG, Capcom intentionally removed Denuvo from the game’s Steam store page. This action confirms that the removal was deliberate and not accidental. A leaked document from Crytek in 2020 revealed that Denuvo charges game companies based on the duration of software usage within a title, with the highest fee occurring in the first six months.

Over time, the cost of Denuvo tends to decrease, leading most game titles to eventually abandon it. Some titles remove it within weeks, while others, like Resident Evil Village, take years. Capcom has followed a similar strategy with other titles such as Resident Evil 2 and 3 remakes, Devil May Cry 5, and Monster Hunter: World. The removal of DRM from Resident Evil Village will certainly be interesting to observe, especially considering that many PC players initially boycotted the game due to performance issues.

Recently, Resident Evil Village received a virtual reality mode on the upcoming PS VR2 as a free DLC. This mode allows players to experience the entire game in VR, immersing themselves once again as protagonist Ethan Winters. The update also includes a dedicated VR tutorial and shooting ranges to help players master the new format. A demo version of the VR mode is also available to all PS VR2 owners.

In another development, Capcom’s latest title, Resident Evil 4 (2023), received a free update called Mercenaries Mode on April 7. This update introduces wave-based enemy missions featuring special agent Leon S. Kennedy and other characters. However, the update also introduced microtransactions to the game’s digital store. In Resident Evil 4, players must collect Spinels by completing missions and exchange them with the Merchant to acquire tickets for upgrading weapons. Alternatively, players can now purchase these tickets using real money. On Steam, the prices range from Rs. 169 for one ticket to Rs. 589 for a pack of five.

Meanwhile, voice artist Lily Gao, who portrayed Ada Wong in the Resident Evil 4 remake, responded to harsh comments she received regarding her performance. In an Instagram post, she expressed gratitude for being the first Asian actor to portray Ada and acknowledged the importance of authentic representation. Gao addressed the issue of Asian stereotypes and criticized the detrimental effects of inauthentic casting, advocating for the recognition of all types of Asian women. She emphasized that her portrayal of Ada is a strong and multifaceted character who defies stereotypes.
