Twitter has taken legal action against Meta Platforms, the parent company of Facebook, due to its new Threads platform. The lawyer representing Twitter, Alex Spiro, sent a letter to Mark Zuckerberg, CEO of Meta Platforms, stating that Twitter plans to protect its intellectual property rights and demands that Meta ceases using any confidential information or trade secrets belonging to Twitter.
Meta recently launched Threads as part of its effort to compete with Elon Musk’s Twitter and capitalize on Instagram’s large user base. The potential consequence of this move is the diversion of advertising dollars from Twitter at a time when its new CEO is attempting to revive the struggling business.
Threads, although a standalone app, allows users to log in with their Instagram credentials and follow the same accounts they follow on Instagram. This seamless integration with existing user habits could make it an appealing addition for Instagram’s vast user base of over 2 billion monthly active users.
News of Threads’ launch has generated optimism among investors, with Danni Hewson, head of financial analysis at AJ Bell investment firm, expressing excitement about the possibility of Meta creating a “Twitter-Killer.”
Additionally, some view the introduction of Threads as an opportunity to create a less toxic alternative to Twitter. Political figure Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez commented on the release, expressing hopes for a platform with positive vibes, a strong community, excellent humor, and reduced harassment.
Similar to Twitter, Threads allows users to create short text posts that can be liked, shared, and replied to. However, the app lacks direct messaging capabilities. According to a blog post by Meta, posts on Threads can contain up to 500 characters, as well as links, photos, and videos up to five minutes in length.
Threads is now available for download in over 100 countries through both Apple’s App Store and Google’s Play Store.
