Report Claims Flatter Bezels Responsible for Google Pixel Fold Malfunction Within Four Days of Use

Google’s highly anticipated Pixel Fold foldable smartphone was launched today in limited markets. However, there is already a cause for concern as a user who had early access to the device reported that it malfunctioned after only four days of use. Since most pre-ordered units will only be delivered today, it is uncertain whether this is an isolated incident or a more widespread problem, as there have been only a few reported cases so far.

Ron Amadeo from Arstechnica, the owner of the aforementioned Pixel Fold, elucidated that the phone’s seamless design could potentially lead to display damage when particles or debris become trapped between the folded halves. Surprisingly, the user did not subject the Pixel Fold to rigorous usage during the brief testing period; rather, it mostly sat on the desk with minimal usage. The foldable was never dropped, so accidental damage can be ruled out. However, the user noticed damage to the inner folding display after the first 10 rows of pixels at the bottom edge stopped functioning. Eventually, the lower half of the display became unresponsive, affecting the rest of the screen as well.

According to Amadeo’s analysis, the flat folding design of the Google Pixel Fold, with its nearly seamless inner display layout and minimal bezels, is to blame. When dust particles become trapped between the two halves of the inner plastic protective layer, there is limited space for movement. Consequently, the flexible ultra-thin glass (UTG) protective layer is left to shield the display from dents or scratches caused by trapped debris.

In Amadeo’s case, a tiny cavity near the problematic display area may have been caused by a trapped dust particle, which potentially punctured the display when the device was closed. The Verge’s review of the Pixel Fold also highlights the ease with which the device’s inner folding display can be scratched. The reviewer also mentioned a colleague’s experience of a chipped inner display bezel.

While these instances raise valid concerns, it is difficult to determine if they are only related to review units provided to the media or indicative of a broader design flaw that could pose significant problems for Google. Customers will soon voice their own experiences as they set up and use their Pixel Folds in the days to come. We have reached out to Google for a comment regarding the durability of the Pixel Fold, but have yet to receive a response. It is important to note that the Google Pixel Fold has only been officially released in select markets, excluding India.
