Renowned Inventor of Lithium-ion Battery, John Goodenough, Passes Away at Age 100

Dr. John Goodenough, a pioneering scientist in technology, has sadly passed away. The University of Texas at Austin has officially confirmed his death at the age of 100. Dr. Goodenough is widely recognized as the inventor of the lithium-ion battery, a technology that has revolutionized the practicality of cellphones, laptops, and electric vehicles.

While previous researchers had been exploring lithium batteries, it was Dr. Goodenough who achieved a significant breakthrough in 1980 at the University of Oxford. By creating a cathode with layers of lithium and cobalt oxide, he greatly improved the voltage and safety of these batteries. This innovation resulted in batteries with much higher capacity compared to their predecessors, such as lead acid and nickel-cadmium batteries.

Another important milestone in lithium-ion battery development came when Dr. Akira Yoshino replaced raw lithium with safer lithium ions. Sony delivered the first consumer-friendly rechargeable lithium-ion battery in 1991 based on Dr. Yoshino’s practical design. This breakthrough allowed for the production of more portable and efficient mobile devices, as well as the emergence of electric cars as a viable option.

Dr. Goodenough’s contributions extend beyond the lithium-ion battery. During his time at MIT in the 1950s and 1960s, he played a key role in pioneering the technology that eventually became random access memory (RAM). He was known for his collaboration with colleagues and continued to actively research and develop next-generation battery technologies even in his 90s.

While he may not have been widely known to the public, Dr. Goodenough received notable recognition for his work, including the Nobel Prize in Chemistry in 2019 and the US National Medal of Science in 2011. His legacy will undoubtedly continue to shape the technology landscape for years to come, despite the gradual shift towards alternative battery technologies.

As industries explore new advancements, such as solid-state batteries with higher densities, faster charging, and lower costs, it is important to acknowledge the significant impact Dr. Goodenough’s efforts have had on the modern tech world. His contributions have paved the way for countless innovations and will leave a lasting imprint on the industry.
