China’s online gaming regulator has recently granted licenses to 27 foreign games, including titles from Tencent Holdings, NetEase, and Bilibili. This marks the second batch of foreign online games to receive publishing licenses in China after an 18-month hiatus due to regulatory crackdowns on the video game industry.
Among the approved games is Tencent’s Merge Mansion, NetEase’s Audition: Everybody Party, and Bilibili’s Shanyao! Youjunshaonu. The National Press and Publication Administration released a list on Monday confirming the approvals.
In December, China ended its crackdown on the video game industry by approving the first batch of imported games. The process was previously suspended in August of 2021. Regulators resumed issuing licenses to domestic games in April 2022.
XD Inc also received licenses for two mobile games, Gorogoa and Wizard of Legend. China’s recent batch of approvals also includes Fairy Tale: Fighting, a mobile game, and Yo-kai Watch 4, a console game.
In other news, Tencent is reportedly in talks with Meta Platforms to distribute its Meta Quest line of virtual reality headsets in China. Tencent, being the world’s largest video game publisher, launched an XR unit last year to develop both virtual reality software and hardware.
