Record-Breaking Box Office Haul: ‘Barbie’ Surpasses ‘The Dark Knight’

The Big Picture

  • Barbie‘s phenomenal box office success continues, surpassing expectations with a $26.1 million earning on Monday and setting records for Warner Bros.
  • This female-driven film directed by Greta Gerwig exceeded predictions, generating $162 million in domestic revenue during its opening weekend, making it a historic achievement for both Gerwig and female directors.
  • Expectations are high for Barbie to continue its box office success, with predictions of reaching $200 million domestically and even potentially hitting $500 million within a week. Ryan Gosling’s exceptional performance is also receiving praise, possibly leading to awards recognition.

Christopher Nolan may face challenges from the evolving film industry and digital effects, but now a plastic doll, through Barbie directed by Greta Gerwig, has set a box office record previously held by Nolan’s The Dark Knight.

Barbie shows no signs of slowing down, as it continues to rake in money at the box office. On Monday, it earned $26.1 million domestically, achieving the biggest Monday in Warner Bros. history and surpassing Nolan’s The Dark Knight which earned $24.5 million on its opening Monday back in 2008.

It’s hard to describe the magnitude of success Barbie and Oppenheimer from Nolan have achieved. During its opening weekend, Barbie made history with a remarkable $162 million in domestic box office revenue. This achievement is typically associated with male-driven superhero films or major franchises like Warner Bros.’ final Harry Potter installment. Furthermore, Greta Gerwig now holds the record for the highest opening weekend by a female director.

Barbenheimer Can’t Be Stopped

The success of Barbie and Oppenheimer has surpassed all predictions made by box office experts. Barbie exceeded the projected $90 million to $110 million range, contributing to one of the highest-grossing box office weekends in history. It now ranks fourth, following the massive successes of Avengers: Endgame, Avengers: Infinity War, and Star Wars: The Force Awakens.

With official numbers yet to be released, Barbie is expected to surpass $200 million domestically and has already reached $356.3 million in just three days. It is on track to become the second movie in the year to gross over $1 billion, trailing only The Super Mario Bros. Movie. There are even expectations that Barbie could hit the $500 million mark within its first week in theaters. The film’s strong word of mouth and Ryan Gosling’s outstanding performance have also garnered praise, positioning him as a front-runner for awards recognition, particularly for Best Supporting Actor at the 2024 Academy Awards.

Barbie is currently screening in theaters.
