Recap of Episode 2: ‘Secret Invasion’ Blames it All on Fury

After a remarkably dark and unexpected first episode, Secret Invasion delivers a much more captivating and intriguing Episode 2. This installment of the MCU Disney+ miniseries delves into the aftermath of the terrorist attack from the previous episode, exploring how it ignites a war between humans and Skrulls on a global scale. Written by Kyle Bradstreet and directed by Ali Selim, Episode 2 introduces new elements to the story, including the potential creation of Skrull Super-Soldiers, known as Super-Skrulls in the comics. However, amidst the escalating conflict, one thing becomes apparent: Nick Fury (Samuel L. Jackson) bears responsibility for this dire situation.

The episode opens in 1995, revisiting Fury’s initial encounter with the Skrulls and his promise to help find them a new home. Fast forward to 1997 in Brixton, London, where Fury establishes his first network of Skrull agents. A female Skrull named Varra introduces Fury to Gravik, a young Skrull who lost his parents to the Kree. Despite being behind enemy lines, Gravik managed to escape and make his way to Earth. Varra believes he would be a valuable addition to their network and urges Fury to speak with him. As Fury and Gravik form a bond, Talos addresses the Skrulls, expressing his trust in Fury and promising to secure a new home for them in exchange for their assistance as spies. The Skrulls wholeheartedly join Fury’s cause.

In the present day, Gravik and Talos’ daughter, G’iah, navigate the aftermath of the terrorist attack. Meanwhile, a Skrull named Brogan, posing as an American, is captured by the Russians just as Talos rescues Fury. The episode then takes us onboard a train from Moscow to Warsaw, where Russian soldiers search for Fury. In a clever twist, the woman they question turns out to be Talos in disguise, with Fury emerging from the bathroom. As they converse, Fury reminisces about his past and reveals how his lies have always carried weight. Talos discloses the tragic events that led to the destruction of Skrullos, their homeworld, and confesses that one million Skrulls sought refuge on Earth. Fury, enraged by this revelation, confronts Talos, firmly asserting that there is no place for the Skrulls on Earth.

Back in London, Maria Hill’s mother mourns her daughter’s death, blaming Fury for her demise. Elizabeth demands that Fury ensure Maria’s sacrifice was not in vain. News clips highlight the aftermath of the Skrull attack, with over 2,000 casualties and mounting tensions between nations. Gravik accompanies G’iah to a meeting of the Skrull Council, where they discuss their next move. Gravik expresses confidence in Fury’s intentions and argues that war is their only option. The council members, including the Prime Minister and the secretary-general, are revealed to be Skrulls aligned with Gravik. They appoint him as the General, granting him unchecked power. Despite this, Gravik shows respect for Skrull principles and allows Shirley, a dissenting member, to leave freely.

Shirley contacts Talos, informing him of Gravik’s promotion. Talos requests a meeting with Gravik to discuss G’iah. Meanwhile, G’iah discovers Gravik’s secret lab, where scientists are working with mysterious DNA samples for an unknown purpose. G’iah overhears their conversation and learns about “the Harvest,” a crucial component for their work, which has proven elusive thus far.

An emergency security summit takes place in London, attended by James Rhodes as the US representative. Rhodey faces questions about Fury and Hill’s involvement in the Moscow attack, affirming that if they were present, it was as private citizens. He dismisses the European leaders’ concerns, stressing that the US President only cares if they produce substantial evidence.

As Episode 2 concludes, the stage is set for an escalating conflict between humans and Skrulls, with Gravik and his newfound power at the forefront. The secrets and hidden agendas of various characters continue to shape the narrative, leaving viewers eager to uncover what lies ahead in Secret Invasion.
