Rare and Expensive Apple Sneakers: A 1990s Throwback

Sotheby’s

If you’re a devoted Apple fan and proudly sport an iPhone, Apple Watch, and AirPods, why not complete the ensemble with a pair of exclusive Apple-branded sneakers?

Recently, the auction house Sotheby’s listed a pair of these retro shoes for the staggering price of $50,000.

According to the listing, these sneakers were specially created by Omega Sports for Apple employees and were only given away once at a National Sales Conference in the mid-1990s.

“These sneakers, which never reached the general public, are among the most obscure and highly sought-after items on the resale market,” stated Sotheby’s.

The sneakers feature a mostly white upper with the rainbow Apple logo that the tech giant abandoned in 1999. The logo also appears on each shoe’s tongue.

This rare item is still boxed and comes with an extra set of red laces. However, due to the passage of time, there are some imperfections, such as yellowing around the midsoles and light marks on the toe boxes.

And if, by chance, the buyer wishes to wear these sneakers, they must have size 10.5 feet.

A pair of the same sneakers (size 9.5) was auctioned off in 2020 and sold for $9,687 after 20 bids. Although a significant sum, it pales in comparison to the winning bid of $190,372 for an original, boxed 4GB iPhone at a recent auction.

However, even that seems small compared to the astonishing $905,000 winning bid in a 2022 auction for a working Apple-1 computer from the 1970s. Only 200 were ever made, and this unit is believed to be one of the 50 personally built by Steve Wozniak in Steve Jobs’ garage.
