PS5 Slim Teardown Shows The Console Is Not That Much Smaller Than Its Predecessor

A YouTuber recently uploaded a video tearing down the PS5 Slim console, revealing how the detachable disc drive is connected, challenging how much smaller the new model is than its predecessor, and debunking the necessity to shell out an extra $30 if you want to keep your PS5 vertical.

YouTuber Dave Lee (Dave2D) posted a 10-minute video yesterday, tearing down the PS5 Slim and showcasing its innards. Lee removes the detachable disc drive, revealing a port and hexagon-shaped connector that pairs the two pieces together, with no need for screws. As previously confirmed by PlayStation, the new PS5 will support expandable storage.

More interestingly, Lee placed the PS5 Slim next to the original model, revealing that the console is not that much smaller compared to its predecessor. As previously pointed out, the Slim is still smaller than the model that launched back in 2020, but when stacked up against the Xbox Series X, it is still a big system. The consolation prize is the PS5 Slim does weigh less than the original mode, according to Lee.

Those who are looking to buy the new PS5 and want to have it stand vertically will be happy to know that Lee’s teardown video revealed that the console stands just fine on its own without the vertical stand. Unlike the launch model, which had a versatile stand that allowed owners to place the PS5 vertically or horizontally, the PS5 Slim features a small kickstand that only places the console horizontally. There is a vertical stand PS5 Slim owners can buy, but that’ll cost you an extra $30.

The PS5 Slim is set to release sometime this month, though PlayStation has yet to specify a firm release date. Controversially, the PS5 Slim’s optional disc drive needs to connect to the internet to pair it to a console.
