PS5 Cloud Streaming Beta Rolls Out to Select PS Plus Premium Members: 4K Support, Save Syncing

Sony is taking a step forward by launching the public beta access for cloud gaming on the PS5. According to ResetEra user ArashiGames, selected PS Plus Premium members now have the opportunity to stream specific games in stunning 4K resolution. Although the company confirmed the inclusion of cloud streaming back in June, the details regarding the supported resolution are only surfacing now. It is still unclear whether the maximum resolution refers to the quality of in-game graphics or the streaming resolution itself. However, a screenshot suggests that the available resolutions are entirely dependent on the player’s internet connection. The main concept behind this feature is that users can play games from the cloud without the need to own or download them.

Currently, beta testers can choose from four main resolutions: 720p, 1080p, 1440p, and the aforementioned 2160p (4K). Arashi claims that cloud gaming seamlessly syncs with game saves, allowing players to continue their progression from where they left off. However, it’s important to note that images may appear slightly compressed due to the high-speed processing and delivery over the internet. In the bigger picture, whether Ultra HD cloud streaming refers to the in-game render quality or the resolution it’s being streamed at may not make a significant difference. This added feature serves as another incentive for players to sign up for a PS Plus Premium/Deluxe subscription, as more games will be continuously added to the platform in the future.

Sony previously mentioned that the cloud streaming catalogue will consist of “supported PS5 games.” Thanks to Arashi, we now have a list of these games. The catalogue includes 12 titles, consisting of both first-party PlayStation games that have been released on PC and some smaller third-party entries.

In comparison, Xbox Cloud Gaming offers game streaming up to 1080p, running at 60fps, which is included as part of the higher-tier Xbox Game Pass Ultimate subscription. In a way, Sony’s upcoming PS5 cloud streaming service can be seen as an evolution of the PlayStation Now service, which underwent a rebrand after integrating into PlayStation’s revised plans. However, the current beta test is only available for the PS5, and unlike PS Now, game streaming to a PC is not supported. Additionally, the service is not yet available in India and several other countries. PlayStation CEO Jim Ryan has also mentioned earlier this year that Sony has exciting and ambitious plans for cloud gaming.

As of now, it remains uncertain whether Sony’s upcoming handheld Project Q will support cloud streaming. However, we do know that it will be limited to 1080p, functioning as a remote mirror of a PS5 system that you own. It’s worth mentioning that in April, the company reportedly sought to hire 22 individuals related to cloud gaming technology.
