‘Proofread‘ on Gboard: What is it and how it works
According to a report by 9to5Google, this feature appeared on Pixel Fold with a “Fix it” prompt which also showed Google’s usual symbol for generative AI. On clicking the option, a pop-up explains how the proofreading feature works, with text being sent to Google for processing if users enable the feature.
As users tap the “Proofread” option within Gboard’s toolbar will process the text and will offer suggestions to fix spelling or grammar and even add punctuation. The “Fix it” button will appear in line with suggestions and will automatically fix errors when users tap on it.
The report also includes screenshots that explain how this AI-based writing tool will work. This tool can be a good replacement for the existing autocorrect feature.
The report also claims that Google is developing more AI-based features for Gboard. This includes a feature that will be able to create stickers using AI and a new “tone” feature that will help users rewrite a message with a different tone (for example formal and informal).
