Disney+ released the YA series “American Born Chinese” in May, based on the 2009 Eisner Award-winning graphic novel by Gene Luen Yang. This series weaves together the complexities of father-son relationships with the mythical aspects of being an American Born Chinese. The show aims to fully explore its potential and captivate audiences. To celebrate its success, The Walt Disney Company will make select episodes available on ABC, Hulu, Roku, and YouTube starting June 21.
The story revolves around Jin Wang (played by Ben Wang), a teenage boy trying to navigate high school with his slightly overbearing mother. His life takes a dramatic turn when he meets Wei-Chen (played by Jimmy Liu), a boy with hidden depths and gets caught up in a battle of Chinese mythological gods. Wei-Chen asks Jin for help finding a valuable artifact, and together they embark on a journey after Wei-Chen runs away from his father, Sun WuKong (played by Daniel Wu), and arrives on Earth.
“American Born Chinese” has received critical acclaim, boasting a critic score of 96% on Rotten Tomatoes and being recognized as one of the best TV and Streaming Shows of 2023. The first episode will premiere on ABC on June 24, with it being available on YouTube until July 23. The first three episodes will also air on Hulu and Roku from June 26 to July 9.

“American Born Chinese” is directed by Destin Daniel Cretton and Lucy Liu, featuring an impressive cast that includes Academy Award winners Michelle Yeoh and Ke Huy Quan.
