Microsoft has announced that the Xbox Series S console, now available for pre-order in Canada, will feature a 1TB SSD storage capacity. The console is set to launch on September 1st.
Priced at $449.99, the Series S was unveiled during Microsoft’s Xbox Games Showcase + Starfield Direct event earlier this month as their “one last thing” surprise. It boasts the same design and size as the original Series S, with a sleek matte black color similar to the Xbox Series X.

The most significant improvement is found within the console’s internal storage. The original Series S, released in 2020, supported only a 512GB SSD. However, in reality, only 364GB was available for storage, with the rest being reserved for operating system updates.
This upgrade to a total of 1TB of SSD storage by Microsoft is a commendable move, especially considering that the Series S is an all-digital console. Without a disc drive, players must download and install the games they want to play (excluding cloud support). With games like Call of Duty: Modern Warfare II and Red Dead Redemption II requiring over 150GB of storage each, the demand for more space is increasing. And let’s not forget about Bethesda’s highly anticipated Starfield, reportedly weighing in at 125GB.
If you’re interested in getting your hands on the Carbon Black Series S, you can pre-order it from the Microsoft store. The official release date is September 1st, 2023, just a few days before Starfield‘s launch on September 6th.
