- Republicans and Democrats are claiming the outage is helping the other side
- Some felt Meta’s crash on the same day as Super Tuesday was ‘no coincidence’
Conspiracy theorists have run wild after Facebook and Instagram both crashed on the same day as the Super Tuesday primary elections.
Both Republicans and Democrats baselessly theorized that the crash was intended to help the other side, at the same time voters take to the polls in 16 primaries across the nation.
‘What a coincidence that Facebook, Instagram, and Youtube are down on Super Tuesday,’ one conservative commentator tweeted. ‘Practice run for November?’
Another added: ‘Call me a conspiracy theorist, but Facebook & IG being down on Super Tuesday, a day where 16 primaries are happening does not feel like an oopsies coincidence…’
Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton also chimed in on the mania, noting the ‘national outage of Facebook and Instagram on this Super Tuesday.’
The wild political theories come just a week after AT&T’s servers also crashed, with many linking the two and feeling the US is increasingly suffering cyber-attacks.
The latest crash on Tuesday left hundreds of thousands of users unable to access their social media accounts – although the crash hit Europe as well as the US.
A source inside Facebook told DailyMail.com that the company’s internal systems were also down, which may have led to Tuesday’s outage.
As his rivals reeled from the crash, Elon Musk took the opportunity to delight in the outage.
He responded to Meta’s outage with a post on X: ‘If you’re reading this post, it’s because our servers are working.’
While there is no early evidence of a link between Tuesday’s crash and the presidential primaries, some still felt that timing was not an accident.
‘Facebook, IG, and Threads just happen to have a massive outage on Super Tuesday… I’m sure it’s just a coincidence though,’ said conservative writer Adrian Norman.
And although the results of Tuesday’s primaries are predicted to be easy wins for incumbent President Joe Biden and former President Donald Trump, others warned it may only be a trial for chaos in their general election showdown.
‘Practice run for November?’ questioned another theorist, referencing the presidential general election on November 5.
