Since the introduction of Threads, there has been speculation about whether the app will replace Twitter. With millions of users joining the platform, it seemed that Elon Musk, the owner of Twitter, and new CEO Linda Yaccarino were not pleased with its popularity. However, Adam Mosseri, the head of Instagram, has stated that Threads is not intended to replace Twitter.

While this may not satisfy Musk, as Threads is expected to compete with Twitter, Mosseri emphasized one key difference between the two apps. He explained that Threads will not actively promote politics and hard news, unlike Twitter, which is known for its real-time news updates.

Mosseri clarified that the goal of Threads is to create a public space for communities on Instagram and Twitter to engage in conversations in a less confrontational manner. He acknowledged that politics and news may still be discussed on Threads, but the platform will not actively encourage those topics.

Mosseri’s comment is significant considering his previous role in running Facebook’s News Feed, which gives him valuable insights into social media news consumption.

Furthermore, Meta, the parent company of Facebook and Instagram, has been distancing itself from news and politics. Last year, Meta removed “News” from the name of the Facebook Feed, and recently, it blocked companies from posting news content in response to a new Canadian law that requires platforms to pay publishers for their content.

In a recent interview with The Verge, Mosseri emphasized that Threads aims to attract content creators, particularly newer ones. He believes that the app can provide a more appealing platform for these creators.

However, despite these intentions, it is likely that politics and news will eventually find their way onto Threads. Axios reported that several US politicians have already joined the platform, and in India, prominent political parties have established their presence on Threads. With upcoming elections in both countries, the extent to which Threads remains separate from politics and news is yet to be seen.
