Possible rewrite: Studios That Exploit Loophole in SAG-AFTRA Strike May Face Consequences

In addition to the WGA strike, the SAG-AFTRA strike is also causing disruptions in Hollywood productions. Big projects like Deadpool 3, Stranger Things, The Sandman, Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part Two, and Mortal Combat 2 have been put on hold, and even promotions of completed films have been banned. However, there are a few projects that are still ongoing due to a technicality.

For example, the HBO series House of Dragon and Industry, as well as HBO Max’s Dune spin-off series, Dune: The Sisterhood, will continue despite the strikes. The majority of the members working on these productions are part of the British union Equity, not SAG-AFTRA. However, it’s worth noting that some cast members belong to SAG-AFTRA. Fortunately, they cannot join the strike due to the strict anti-trade-union laws in the UK. If they were to join, they would face legal consequences.

With the failure of the long-running WGA strike to bring about meaningful change and studios already trying to find ways to work around the SAG-AFTRA strike, the general public, in support of those demanding their rights, has come up with a solution – cancel subscriptions to all streaming platforms. By doing this, studios will struggle to meet the required viewership numbers even if they manage to bypass the strike rules.

Currently, studios are not showing any intention of accepting the terms to end the strikes. Industry moguls like Bob Iger openly claim that the actors and writers are being unrealistic. Meanwhile, years of hard work are being overshadowed by streaming platforms, neglecting the creativity and innovation that truly deserve recognition. Many people are now considering the idea of giving streamers a taste of their own medicine.

For those who criticize the British union, Equity, it’s important to understand that they are not against joining the strike. Equity has expressed “unwavering solidarity” with the actors’ strike, as they also face challenges from employers attempting to undermine their agreements. However, due to restrictive and draconian labor laws in the UK, Equity is unable to join SAG-AFTRA’s fight for their rights.
