Pokemon Go players “despise” key feature

Scott Baird

Pokemon Go players are criticizing one of the key features of the game due to how poorly it’s handled and how much of it is left to random chance.

Anyone who plays the mainline Pokemon games can breeze through the story mode with only a basic knowledge of how the battle system works. With six Pokemon of different types in your team, you’ll crush the Champion in no time.

Competitive Pokemon battles are a much different beast, as you need a perfectly min-maxed team in terms of stats, types, moves, and abilities, not to mention proper application of the game’s gimmick, such as Mega Evolution or Dynamaxing.

While Pokemon Go has battles, they’re nowhere near as in-depth as the mainline games, with teams restricted to three Pokemon and most of the moves & abilities not present.

Pokemon Go players hate battling

A user on the Pokemon Go Reddit has created a thread slamming the battle mechanic in the game, partly due to how luck-based it is. This is because the choice of lead Pokemon is one of the major determining factors of all battles, taking a lot of the skill out of the game.

“The state of battling has been atrocious since the game came out,” one user said, “It’s half baked system in the game whether you’re talk about rocket, raids or PvP. Nothing that you think should be important with stats is actually that important such as CP and IV.”

“For instance I had a 2800CP Gyrados easily defeat my 100% ~4200CP Kyogre which make zero sense. The only thing that appears to have any value is moves which are super meta. Correct me if I’m wrong but weren’t they rotating the meta behind the moves every season?”

“None of this is clearly explained within the game. It’s actually quite trash and has gotten annoying beyond belief. The whole system needs to be revamped to make more sense and have more strategy behind it.”

The limited number of moves in Pokemon Go battles means that most of the strategy comes with the team loadout, but if you get a bad type matchup, then it’s incredibly hard to score a comeback.

The fact that the Pokemon Go battles aren’t turn-based and require on-the-spot thinking can also make them frustrating compared to the mainline games. As such, it’s no surprise that some fans don’t like the system and ignore it when they can.
