Platform Fee: Zomato starts testing Rs 2 platform fee: What is it and other details

Zomato has recently implemented a flat Rs 2 platform fee on its food delivery app, initially for select users in specific markets. This fee is charged per order and applies regardless of the order value or whether the user is a Zomato Gold member.

Swiggy, Zomato’s main competitor, introduced a similar platform fee of Rs 2 on all orders back in April.

Zomato’s Rs 2 platform fee is currently in the experimental phase. If successful, it may be rolled out universally to enhance profitability. However, Zomato has not made a final decision on this matter yet.

This platform fee announcement comes shortly after Zomato reported its first-ever quarterly profit of Rs 2 crore for the June quarter. Zomato’s CFO, Akshant Goyal, had previously stated that the company had not decided on implementing platform fees.

Despite this, Zomato’s core businesses experienced strong growth, resulting in a 64% increase in income to Rs 2,597 crore during the June quarter. The company also achieved a profit after tax of Rs 2 crore, compared to a loss of Rs 186 crore in the same period last year.

Zomato’s founder and CEO, Deepinder Goyal, expressed optimism about the company’s growth in a letter to shareholders. He credited the positive trajectory to the success of strategic investments and a recovery in demand for food deliveries in recent months. As of June 2023, Zomato had approximately 17.5 million monthly transacting customers.
