During the ExileCon event, Grinding Gear Games made an exciting announcement regarding Path of Exile 2. Originally planned as an expansion to the original Path of Exile, the game has grown significantly since its announcement in 2019. With over 100 developers working on Path of Exile 2, it has evolved into its own standalone title. Each game will have its own unique mechanics, leagues, and features, but will still be supported.
In terms of microtransactions and cosmetics, they will be cross-compatible between both games, unless there are limitations. For example, the Druid ascendancy is exclusive to Path of Exile 2 and does not exist in Path of Exile. As a result, any Druid-specific cosmetics will only be available for Path of Exile 2.
Path of Exile 2 is now a standalone game
When Grinding Gear Games initially announced Path of Exile 2 in 2019, it seemed more like an expansion that would enhance the base game. As a fan of Path of Exile, I was conflicted because it appeared that Path of Exile 2 would offer a unique experience with a focus on accessibility. Combining the two games seemed counter-intuitive to me.
It now makes perfect sense to support Path of Exile 2 as a separate game. Here are some of the notable features of Path of Exile 2:
- 100 distinct environments
- 600 monsters
- 100 bosses
- 1,500 passive skills
- 36 ascendancy classes
- 240 active skills
- 700 equipment types
- 6-person co-op
By comparison, the original Path of Exile currently has 19 ascendancy classes, 1,325 passive skills, and 276 active skills, despite receiving updates and expansions for almost a decade. Furthermore, separating the two games will help streamline the ongoing balancing process, as they each have their own unique ascendancy classes.
Grinding Gear Games has announced that a closed beta for Path of Exile 2 will be launched on June 7, 2024. Although a release date has not been officially announced yet, it seems that we will have to wait a bit longer for the game to be available.
