Palia’s Gameplay Reveal Leaves Me Thrilled to Go Fishing in the Social MMO – Destructoid

Palia: A Sneak Peek into the Enjoyable World of Fishing, Hunting, Gardening, and More

When it comes to “social MMOs,” I’ve often been skeptical. The concept is enticing, but few games have truly succeeded in delivering a captivating social experience. However, since the announcement of Palia a couple of years ago, my interest has been piqued. Singularity 6, the developer behind the game, consists of industry veterans from renowned companies such as Blizzard, Riot, Zynga, and Sony. With such an impressive track record, it’s clear that this team has the potential to achieve their goals.

In a much-anticipated move, Singularity 6 has finally revealed the official gameplay of Palia today. While I still have some unanswered questions, I can confidently say that I am thrilled to immerse myself in Kilima Village and explore the enchanting world of Palia.

Did Someone Say Fishing?

There’s a common saying that the quality of an MMO is directly linked to its fishing system. While not entirely true, there is certainly something immensely enjoyable about a well-crafted fishing mechanic in an MMO. Even games like Destiny 2 have recently introduced fishing as part of their Season of the Deep. The fishing in Palia appears incredibly serene and relaxing, especially when combined with the social aspect.

In Palia, fishing with friends goes beyond mere camaraderie. Fishing near friends grants both players a buff that enhances their angling abilities over time. Furthermore, if you witness a fellow angler struggling to reel in a particularly challenging catch, you can offer encouragement to help them successfully catch the fish. It seems that multiple players can join in cheering someone on. I cannot wait to experience the thrill of having a crowd gather around me, cheering as I proudly display a sunfish caught through perseverance and skill.

It’s not Just About Fishing

While fishing is undoubtedly a highlight for me, the first gameplay reveal of Palia showcased much more. This game deviates from the traditional MMO formula of slaying monsters for experience and loot. Instead, you’ll enhance various life skills, such as fishing, hunting, gardening, cooking, and crafting, within a social setting that accommodates up to 25 players.

The gameplay of Palia reminds me of beloved titles like Animal Crossing and Stardew Valley. Players engage in entertaining mini-games to accomplish tasks like creating new recipes or crafting unique furniture pieces. As you continue to practice your chosen craft, you will level up and unlock new activities and more efficient methods to complete them.

Now, I understand that Palia may not appeal to everyone. It is not striving to be the next World of Warcraft or Final Fantasy XIV. However, is that really a negative characteristic? If World of Warcraft Classic or FF14 have taught me anything, it’s that the social aspects of an MMO often define the overall experience. And in a game focused explicitly on social interaction, all I can say is sign me up. I’ll meet you at the pier, ready to embark on a fishing adventure.

If you’re interested in getting a taste of Palia, PC players can sign up for the closed beta test starting on August 2. An open beta will follow on August 10.
