Overwatch 2 is toning down its stealthiest and deadliest adversary

Blizzard’s Aaron Keller recently shared some exciting updates about Overwatch 2 in his Director’s Take blog. One of the highlights is a sneak peek at the next support hero and a glimpse into the new Flashpoint mode. However, buried within the post is a tantalizing mention of an upcoming nerf to one of Overwatch 2’s most problematic abilities.

I have a deep affinity for Zenyatta. He’s my go-to hero and his balls just feel amazing to fling around. Not to mention, his healing over time is reliable and low maintenance. But what really sets Zen apart is his Discord Orb – a game-changing ability that boosts damage dealt by 25%.

This ability has caused countless balance struggles since the game’s launch. While Zen’s viability in the meta depends on his survivability, the Discord Orb has been a consistent problem. In Overwatch 2, it can significantly impact how quickly a team can eliminate enemy tanks or squishier heroes.

What makes the Discord Orb particularly terrifying is its subtle nature. It quietly hovers near a character, amplifying the damage they receive without drawing much attention. This can make it difficult to understand why someone is being obliterated. But there’s intriguing news.

Keller mentions “slight adjustments” to weaken Zenyatta’s Discord Orb in the mid-season five patch. The specific changes have not been disclosed, but past adjustments have ranged from reducing the damage multiplier to altering its duration once a target is out of Zen’s line of sight. Personally, I agree with Overwatch streamer ‘Flats’ who suggests that the orb should have a lower multiplier when applied to tanks.

Additionally, the blog highlights other changes set to make an impact. These include reducing the dominance of Torbjörn and Symmetra’s turrets at lower ranks, improving Sojourn’s Railgun spread for more consistent long-range bursts, and enhancing the frontline capabilities of Reinhardt and Orisa for better fort defense during brawls.

The blog also features a charming hand-drawn map demonstrating how Flashpoint spawns will function. It shows an ‘X’ shape with five control points, and each team will have a forward spawn for the two points farthest from their starting safe room. Plus, there’s a brief teaser image of the upcoming hero, building anticipation for the full reveal.

With the release of Overwatch 2 season 6, which brings PvE content, it’s worth checking out our Overwatch 2 tier list to see the current top-performing heroes.
