The Perseid meteor shower, the most popular and reliable meteor shower in the northern hemisphere, has officially started.

Taking place from July 14 to September 1 in 2023, the Perseid meteor shower will reach its peak during the pre-dawn hours of Sunday, August 13. The peak rate of meteor sightings can reach up to 100 shooting stars per hour, but the normal expected rate in rural areas is around 50-75 during the peak, according to the American Meteor Society.

Many people take advantage of this annual event, caused by debris from comet 109P/Swift-Tuttle colliding with Earth’s atmosphere, to go camping and RV-ing. This is a wise decision, as being in a location with minimal light pollution and the ability to be outside during unconventional hours is crucial for witnessing the spectacular show.

Here are six important things to consider when planning a trip to observe the Perseid meteor shower:

  • Choose a location with low light pollution. This can be a rural area without artificial lights or an International Dark Sky Park. Booking in advance is recommended.
  • Ensure clear skies, as clouds will obstruct the view.
  • Plan to be outside during the peak hours, which occur overnight between Saturday, August 12 and Sunday, August 13. Avoid going to sleep before at least 2 a.m., preferably 3 a.m.
  • Patience is key, as observing meteor showers requires waiting.
  • Allow your eyes to adjust to the darkness for 30 minutes to an hour. Avoid looking at your smartphone, as it can be distracting and hinder night vision.
  • Leave binoculars and telescopes at home, as they limit visibility. The naked eye is sufficient for enjoying the meteor shower.
  • Make yourself comfortable by bringing a lawn chair or blanket to avoid strain on your neck.

This year’s Perseid meteor shower has garnered excitement due to its peak night aligning with a new moon. The moon will only be 9% illuminated as it rises, minimizing interference during the peak viewing period. In contrast, last year’s Perseid peak was hindered by a full moon.

Meteors, commonly known as “shooting stars,” are small pieces of rock or dust that burn up upon entering Earth’s atmosphere. Meteor showers occur when the Earth passes through the debris-filled orbit of a comet or asteroid. In the case of the Perseids, it is caused by comet Swift-Tuttle, which completes an orbit around the sun approximately every 133 years.

The Perseid meteor shower is predominantly visible in the northern hemisphere due to the prominence of the constellation Perseus, which rises in the northeast during mid-August. While Perseids appear to radiate from Perseus, they can be observed anywhere in the night sky.
