‘Oppenheimer’s’ Sex Scene Under Fire, Accused as ‘Building Blocks of a Wider Conspiracy’

Spoilers ahead for Oppenheimer.

Oppenheimer, directed by Christopher Nolan, features a controversial sex scene for the first time in his filmmaking career. This scene has sparked controversy and offended a significant number of people worldwide.

If any other director had made a film about the father of the atomic bomb, they would have used the famous quote, “I am become Death, destroyer of worlds,” as a standout moment in the trailers and marketing. But Nolan took a different approach, which has proven to be even more divisive.

Placing this quote in the middle of a sex scene was certainly an interesting choice. It is delivered by Cillian Murphy to Florence Pugh’s character, Jean Tatlock, during intimate moments, and it has generated a highly controversial response. Uday Mahurkar, an Indian journalist and the government’s information commissioner, criticized the scene on Twitter.

Mahurkar directly addressed Nolan, stating, “It has come to our notice that the movie Oppenheimer contains a scene that makes a scathing attack on Hinduism.” He described the offense caused by the scene among many individuals.

“We do not understand the motivation and logic behind this unnecessary scene about the life of a scientist. But it directly assaults the religious beliefs of a billion tolerant Hindus. It almost appears to be part of a larger conspiracy by anti-Hindu forces, waging a war on the Hindu community. In our polarized world, the media, politics, and even the Hollywood film industry are careful not to depict the Quran and Islam in any manner that may offend Muslims. They use the term ‘Islamophobia’ for those who cross this line. Why should Hindus not receive the same courtesy? On behalf of a billion Hindus and the timeless tradition of lives transformed by the revered Geeta, we urge you to uphold the dignity of their sacred book and remove this scene from your film worldwide. If you choose to ignore this appeal, it will be seen as a deliberate assault on Indian civilization.”

It remains to be seen if Nolan, who is not active on social media, will become aware of the backlash and how he will respond or address it. This controversy serves as a reminder that Oppenheimer’s opening weekend is not solely about its box office performance.
