On August 10th, Overwatch 2 will introduce new story missions and a fresh PvP mode.

The highly-anticipated fifth season of Overwatch 2 is set to debut on Tuesday, offering players an array of exciting updates, including a fantasy theme, a mythic skin for the popular Tracer, and a limited-time game mode. However, many devoted gamers feel as though this season is a mere placeholder for the much-anticipated sixth season, which is scheduled to launch on August 10th.

It’s important to note that Blizzard has declared this upcoming season to be the biggest update yet for Overwatch 2, which will be officially dubbed Overwatch 2: Invasion. Unfortunately, long-awaited hero missions that were originally planned for long-term progression features have been scrapped.

Nevertheless, the season kicks off with three story missions where you can join forces with friends and other players to take on the villainous Null Sector. They are busy decimating cities and abducting innocent Omnics, sentient robots that have become an integral part of society following a war. Null Sector has an army of formidable foes, including “the powerful Annihilators and the deadly Stalkers.”

Blizzard has promised a new co-op mission in the sixth season, which will take gamers to new, hitherto-locked areas of the Kings Row map that aren’t accessible in other competitive modes. According to an Xbox blog post, players will “guide the TS-1 push bot on a mission to save Tracer’s friend and the Omnic Underworld from Null Sector forces.” The previously unassuming robot will also have its own weapons this time around.

In addition to these ambitious updates, Blizzard has also revealed the upcoming Flashpoint game mode, exclusively for player vs. player modes. This mode will feature two of the largest PvP maps to date, with multiple capture points and a goal to capture three of them before the opposing team does. Once a point is secured, another will open up.

Lastly, the much-anticipated Hero Mastery mode has also been teased and is set to challenge players with single-player training courses for specific heroes. Each course will assess the player’s understanding of a hero’s weaponry and abilities, with a leaderboard allowing gamers to compare their skills to others. Hero Mastery courses for select characters will release with Overwatch 2: Invasion, with more additions planned for future seasons. Moreover, an exclusive firing range has been added in which gamers can practice with any hero and customize the settings to hone their skills further.

For subscribers of Game Pass Ultimate, Blizzard has a special treat in-store. Starting on August 10th, they can unlock five most recent heroes (Sojourn, Junker Queen, Kiriko, Ramattra, and Lifeweaver) as well as the next upcoming addition, without having to earn in-game challenges or pay for the characters in the in-game store. They’ll also receive legendary skins and other cosmetics for each of these heroes as part of the New Heroes Starter Pack.

Finally, Blizzard has teased a new support hero in the works. The trailer provided a brief sneak-peak, revealing a mysterious hero with a cape and a large weapon, leaving fans enraptured in anticipation of the latest addition to the game. The Overwatch 2: Invasion trailer marks an inspiring new chapter for the game, following a previous letdown regarding player vs. environment ambitions. In its stead, the game will focus more on developing story and lore in the future. As an avid Mei player, I can’t wait for season five to commence, allowing me to further slow down my enemies.
