Offered exclusively to Tesla customers, one-time transfers of Full Self-Driving (FSD) are now available with new vehicle purchases.

Tesla has announced a new option for customers to transfer their Full Self-Driving (FSD) software to a different vehicle, according to a report from Not A Tesla App. Elon Musk, the CEO of Tesla, revealed during an earnings call that this transfer would be a “one-time amnesty,” although he did not provide specific details at the time.

However, Twitter user @Kdahlenburg has shared the official terms of Tesla’s FSD transfer offer. To take advantage of this opportunity, customers will need to purchase a new Tesla and take delivery before September 30th, 2023.

It’s important to note that Tesla does not guarantee delivery of the new vehicle by the end of the program, and the offer is not applicable retroactively after delivery. Additionally, owners will forfeit FSD on their current vehicle “up to one week” before their scheduled delivery date, even if they choose to keep the old car.

During the earnings call, Musk mentioned that newly purchased vehicles would need to be delivered by the end of Q3. In addition to the FSD transfer offer, Musk also revealed that Tesla is in discussions to license FSD software to another automaker.

Traditionally, FSD purchases with Tesla were tied to the specific vehicle and not transferable. For example, if a customer wanted to upgrade from a Tesla Model 3 to a Model Y SUV, they would have to repurchase the FSD software. Furthermore, if a customer’s car was totaled in an accident, they would lose the FSD package.

This lack of transferability has been a source of frustration for many Tesla owners, especially considering the high cost of the feature. Initially priced at $5,000, the FSD package has now increased to $15,000. Some owners have been able to privately sell their vehicles without Tesla disabling the existing FSD software. However, with this new offer, Tesla is explicitly prohibiting any future transfers, whether through private sale or otherwise.

While the FSD transfer offer may not fully satisfy customers who have recently made a vehicle purchase before July 20th, it could potentially boost sales for Tesla during a quarter where delivery expectations were already lower due to factory upgrades.
