Steaming Ahead: Analyzing the Adoption of Nvidia’s GeForce RTX 4000 GPUs

With a whopping 120 million active players, Steam remains unparalleled as the leading PC gaming platform. Its monthly Hardware Survey provides valuable insights into the popularity of various GPUs among the gaming community. Following the recent release of the survey, we decided to delve into the adoption rate of Nvidia’s GeForce RTX 4000 GPUs. The results were underwhelming, but this is typically the case for new graphics card generations. However, the absence of the RTX 4060 Ti in the top 86 most-used GPUs is an ominous sign for Nvidia.

Since its launch on May 24, the Nvidia GeForce RTX 4060 Ti has received a lukewarm reception. Despite its support for the exceptional DLSS 3 software suite, our Nvidia GeForce RTX 4060 Ti 8GB review revealed that the underwhelming 8GB VRAM hindered its performance. The latest Steam Hardware Survey suggests that consumers share the same sentiment.

The survey reveals a comprehensive list of the most frequently used graphics cards on the platform. Notably, the Nvidia GeForce GTX 1650 remains a perennial favorite among 5.50% of Steam gamers. Several RTX 4000 series cards also make an appearance, with the Nvidia GeForce RTX 4060 Laptop GPU (utilizing the AD107 chip) claiming the highest share at 0.79% of users.

In totality, the RTX 4000 series enjoys an overall adoption rate of approximately 3% on Steam. While this may seem modest, it is comparable to the adoption numbers seen by the RTX 3000 series after 8 months and surpasses the RTX 2000 series, which achieved only a 2% adoption rate within the same timeframe. Considering the lukewarm response to the current generation of cards, a 3% adoption rate is fairly impressive.

However, Nvidia should be concerned by the conspicuous absence of the RTX 4060 Ti 8GB on the list. Out of the 86 GPUs mentioned, which include even dated and obscure options like the Nvidia GeForce MX110, the exclusion of the RTX 4060 Ti 8GB is quite telling. Although it typically takes time for new graphics cards to gain traction, the fact that this particular model is used by less than 0.15% of users is certainly a cause for concern.

Undoubtedly, the performance of your PC while running games heavily depends on your GPU.
