According to a report released today (July 31), Nintendo has sent development kits for its upcoming console to “key partner studios” in preparation for a 2024 launch.
Sources cited by Video Games Chronicle suggest that the new console will have similarities to the Nintendo Switch, with portable features. The console will use an LCD screen instead of an OLED to reduce costs and accommodate storage for more demanding games.
Additionally, the console will include a cartridge slot for playing physical copies of games. The plan is to release the console in the second half of 2024 to avoid potential shortages, which plagued the launches of the Xbox Series X|S and PlayStation 5 in late 2020.
“Looking at Nintendo’s financials, it seems clear that it’s time for new hardware in 2024,” commented industry consultant Dr. Serkan Toto to Video Games Chronicle.
Christopher Dring, head of games B2B at ReedPop, agreed with Toto but highlighted potential challenges for Nintendo in launching a new console.
“While its core fans eagerly anticipate new hardware, Nintendo will need to convince its more casual, family-oriented fans. For example, what will the next Mario Kart offer that they aren’t already getting from the current one? There should be a greater selection of games on the new console compared to the Nintendo Switch in 2017,” Dring stated.
In 2022, Nintendo indicated its focus was on expanding and growing its user base of 100 million Switch users and transitioning into the next generation with a new device. This suggests the potential for backwards compatibility between the Switch and the new console, although the company has not provided further details at this time.
