Exciting news for Nintendo fans! According to a recent report from VGC, the highly anticipated successor to the Nintendo Switch is expected to hit the market in the second half of 2024.
Prominent partners of Nintendo claim to have already received development kits for the new console. This is a common practice to ensure developers can familiarize themselves with the new hardware and have games ready for launch.
Details about the new system have been trickling in. Similar to the Nintendo Switch, the next-gen console will feature a portable mode. However, instead of an OLED screen, it will come equipped with an LCD screen to minimize production costs.
But what about physical games? Don’t worry, the new console is rumored to have a cartridge slot, allowing players to enjoy physical game copies alongside the digital revolution.
Backward compatibility remains uncertain
Unfortunately, it is unclear whether the new console will support backward compatibility with the Nintendo Switch. Considering the immense popularity of the Switch, backward compatibility would be a major selling point for Nintendo. However, adding the required chip for compatibility would potentially increase production costs, which Nintendo might be keen to avoid in order to keep the price point reasonable.
Looking at the timing, the second half of 2024 seems fitting for a new Nintendo console release. Switch sales have been declining in recent years, indicating space in the market for a fresh console. Moreover, a late 2024 launch would give the Switch a life-cycle of just over seven years, in line with its competitors like the PS3, PS4, Xbox 360, and Xbox One.
So, are you ready for a new Nintendo console? Personally, I’m definitely open to the idea. But I sincerely hope that it offers backward compatibility.
