‘NFC Payments on The Verge of Becoming Completely ‘Contactless”

As you make a contactless payment, you may wonder why it’s not entirely contactless. The reason is that near-field communication (NFC) technology operates at a very short distance, requiring your device to physically touch another device. However, this may change in the near future as the NFC Forum has unveiled a roadmap for NFC technology that stretches until 2028.
The NFC Forum, established by Sony, NXP Semiconductors, and Nokia in 2004 to advance NFC technology, has outlined five key initiatives for the future of the technology within the next two to five years. One of these initiatives aims to extend the range of NFC connections, enabling wireless charging for small devices like earbuds.
Currently, NFC connections are limited to a distance of just 5mm. The NFC Forum plans to increase this distance by four to six times, making contactless payments truly contactless, as well as faster and more convenient. This expansion in range would reduce the need for precise antenna alignment.
Another objective of the NFC Forum is to enable multiple actions with a single tap. They also intend to provide NFC-enabled smartphones with Point-of-Sale capabilities and the ability to share recycling information for products.
Apple introduced a Tap to Pay API last year, allowing developers to use iPhones as payment terminals. With the new NFC standards, this feature will become native and accessible to more devices, enabling businesses and individuals to accept payments anywhere.
The NFC Forum is also developing a feature called the “multi-purpose tap,” which will allow multiple actions to be performed with a single tap.
In addition to making payments more convenient, the NFC Forum is working on increasing wireless charging power from 1W to 3W, making it more practical for everyday use. Although this falls below the Qi standard’s maximum of 15W, the NFC Forum believes it will enable wireless power and charging for smaller devices, such as earbuds.
