Generative AI Chatbots Improve Writing Productivity and Quality
Last week, an AI-generated article about Star Wars written by chatbots caused controversy due to numerous errors. This highlighted the challenges associated with generative AI and raised concerns about the automation of complex writing tasks.
However, a recent study published in the journal Science conducted by MIT suggests that generative AI chatbots can significantly enhance productivity and quality in routine writing tasks such as emails and short reports. According to the study, using chatbots can increase productivity by 40% and improve quality by 18%.
The study involved 453 college-educated individuals who were asked to complete various writing assignments. Tasks included composing press releases, company-wide emails, and consulting reports. Participants had the opportunity to use ChatGPT, a popular generative AI tool, for one of their assignments. The completed assignments were then evaluated by professionals in the respective fields, and participants were timed for each task and given financial incentives.
The study’s lead author, Shakked Noy, expressed excitement about the potential impact of ChatGPT in the labor market, stating, “When we first started using ChatGPT, it was evident that it was a groundbreaking tool like nothing we’ve seen before.”
While the increase in productivity is not surprising, the study also revealed an unexpected improvement in quality. Noy believes that ChatGPT’s writing capabilities are responsible for this, as it can generate sentences that are sufficient for simple tasks.
However, the authors acknowledge the limitations of the study. Due to budget and time constraints, the tasks selected did not require rigorous fact-checking. Therefore, the study did not explore the potential impact of fact-checking time on overall productivity.
These findings come at a time when generative AI apps are generating excitement and concern about their impact on the future of work. Estimates suggest that generative AI could add trillions of dollars in value to the global economy annually. Additionally, OpenAI estimates that 80% of jobs can incorporate generative AI capabilities.
Participant surveys conducted after the study reflected both excitement and concerns about the use of AI in writing tasks. The likelihood of using chatbots in real jobs decreased slightly two months after the study, indicating uncertain attitudes towards AI’s long-term effects.
As the use of generative AI continues to proliferate, the authors emphasize the need to closely monitor the macro trends and economic implications. Noy stated, “It’s going to be a big deal. Exactly what it’s going to do and how it’s going to affect the economy, I think it’s too early to tell.”
