New Feature: Google Lens now assists in identifying unusual skin rashes

Google has revealed a new feature for its visual search tool, Lens, which allows users to “search skin conditions.” This feature aims to assist individuals in quickly researching and identifying odd moles or rashes on their bodies.

In a recent blog post, Google highlighted this capability, emphasizing the challenge of describing certain skin conditions with words alone. The visual search tool aims to overcome this obstacle by providing visual matches to inform users’ search when they take a picture or upload a photo through Lens. It can be particularly helpful when trying to describe other body issues, such as bumps on the lip, lines on nails, or hair loss on the head.

However, it is important to note that Lens warns that its search results are solely “informational” and should not be considered a medical diagnosis. If individuals require a diagnosis, they should consult their doctor.

Despite these warnings, there may still be individuals who utilize the feature as a medical diagnosis tool. To avoid such misuse, Google may need to reconsider offering the feature altogether if it wants to discourage this behavior.

The Verge also raises concerns regarding the accuracy of machine learning and AI tools like Lens. Accuracy, especially for individuals with darker skin tones, has been a consistent issue. While Google has claimed improved accuracy for darker skin tones in previous instances, questions remain about how they arrived at this conclusion.

Moreover, there are various potential privacy concerns associated with taking pictures of potential skin conditions and uploading them to Lens.
