New Abilities, Themed Switch OLED, and More Unveiled in The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom Gameplay

Nintendo is set to release The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom on May 12, and to give fans a taste of what’s to come, they’ve unveiled 10 minutes of captivating gameplay. In this sneak peek, producer Eiji Aonuma takes us on a tour of the vast lands of Hyrule and the breathtaking Sky Islands, showcasing Link’s new abilities, including time rewind and the ability to combine objects to create powerful weapons. Aonuma also confirms that the highly anticipated sequel is now complete, after facing a delay from its original 2022 release date. Adding to the excitement, a special The Legend of Zelda: Tears of The Kingdom-themed Nintendo Switch OLED model will be launching on April 28.

The gameplay footage starts with Link exploring Hyrule on horseback, when suddenly, a massive rock plummets from the sky. We witness Link using the new ‘Recall’ ability to reverse the rock’s descent, transforming it into a majestic elevator that transports him to the wondrous Sky Islands. Aonuma emphasizes the freedom of exploration, encouraging players to discover various methods to reach these floating islands. The sequel retains the weapon durability feature, with items like wooden branches easily breaking after a few strikes. To address this issue, Aonuma showcases Link’s ‘Fuse’ ability, which allows him to combine a branch with a boulder, creating a sturdy makeshift hammer that withstands damage and degradation.

The possibilities for weapon fusion are vast and exciting. For instance, combining items such as a pitchfork offers an extended reach, providing an advantage against enemies. Additionally, players can fuse arrows with different materials, with ice elemental items transforming the arrows into freezing projectiles, immobilizing distant foes. Furthermore, fusing a monster ‘Keese Eyeball’ with an arrow creates a homing arrow, ensuring a hit regardless of aiming proficiency. Shields can also be enhanced by fusing them with exotic mushrooms, unleashing a cloud of smoke when hit, momentarily blinding enemies.

Next, we are introduced to Link’s extraordinary ‘Ultrahand’ ability, which enables players to craft various contraptions telekinetically. By attaching fans, players can build rafts, carts, and gliders that assist with transportation and traversal. Aonuma clarifies that the vehicles seen in the recent trailer are not readily available at the start of the game; instead, players have the freedom to craft them as they progress.

The ‘Ascend’ ability is also showcased, allowing Link to teleport to higher floors as long as there is a ceiling present. This ability provides an alternative to traditional mountain climbing, as players can enter a cave at the base and activate the ability to effortlessly ascend through barriers.

Aonuma highlights the game’s open-ended nature, encouraging players to think creatively and explore the boundless possibilities within this unfamiliar version of Hyrule. While the video only scratches the surface of the game’s content, there are countless new gameplay mechanics, mysteries, and thrilling encounters awaiting players.

In addition to the game release, Nintendo reveals a Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom-themed black-and-gold Pro Controller and a stylish carrying case, both launching on May 12.

Mark your calendars for May 12, as The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom enchants players exclusively on the Nintendo Switch.
