Netflix’s Female-Led Actioner Inspired by One of 007’s More Sexist Outings

Netflix’s espionage film Heart of Stone has garnered attention for daring to compete with well-established players in the genre. However, reviews suggest that any potential sequels will prioritize engagement rather than critical acclaim.

Gal Gadot, known for her roles in action blockbusters, teamed up with a creative team that aimed to emulate iconic spies such as James Bond, Jason Bourne, and Ethan Hunt. It comes as a surprise when cinematographer George Steel, in an interview with IndieWire, mentions that one of the most outdated and sexist 007 films, Octopussy, served as a major inspiration.

“I love Octopussy, and I would joke with director Tom Harper, ‘I want this film to look like ‘Octupussy.’ He would always look at me slightly terrified, but when Roger Moore comes out of the jungle in that great jacket, I think it’s so beautiful. We didn’t want her to be a glossy ‘Wonder Woman.’ The idea was that it would be interesting to take someone as beautiful as Gal and put her in a slightly rougher aesthetic.”

While not a direct copy, it is worth noting that Octopussy is just one of the many Bond films that have not aged well. The film’s name itself, along with its offensive depictions and references to India, exemplifies casual sexism and misogyny. It is ironic that a new action film, which proudly centers a female lead, would draw inspiration from a back catalogue of globetrotting adventures that do not align with modern sensibilities.
