Netflix Makes a Bold Move with 40 New Game Titles, Set for Launch on iOS and Android in 2023

Netflix, one of the largest streaming services globally, is renowned for its extensive collection of original and licensed movies and TV series. However, it may come as a surprise to many that Netflix also offers a subscription game service for mobile games since November 2021. The intriguing part is that this service is included in your standard Netflix subscription, granting all paid subscribers access to a complete catalog of mobile games on iOS and Android. In 2023, Netflix is placing a significant bet on its gaming service by planning major expansion with collaborations with developers like Ubisoft and Super Evil Megacorp to introduce 40 new titles to the platform.

New Releases on Netflix Games in 2023 and Beyond

The global streaming platform recently announced its plan to bring 40 new games to its platform in 2023. Currently, the service has already launched 55 games since November 2021 and is actively developing a total of 70 games in partnership with external collaborators. Noteworthy upcoming releases include Terra Nil, a reverse city-builder set for launch on March 28, and Mighty Quest: Rogue Palace from Ubisoft, scheduled for release on April 18. Fans of Assassin’s Creed can also anticipate the arrival of a mobile game from the franchise to Netflix games soon.

Monument Valley 1 and 2 are confirmed to be coming to Netflix Games in 2024

Unlike some of Netflix’s earlier titles such as “Too Hot to Handle: Love is a Game” and “Narcos: Cartel Wars Unlimited,” which are based on existing Netflix content, many of the upcoming games are independent of the streaming platform’s movies or TV shows. Netflix aims to establish itself as a major games publisher for mobile platforms, not limiting itself to utilizing games as extensions of its streaming content. Leanne Loombe, Vice President of External Games at Netflix, emphasized this approach.

The games subscription service also plans to include premium titles within its offering. Netflix is collaborating with UsTwo Games to bring Monument Valley and Monument Valley 2 to its service in 2024. This move positions Netflix in direct competition with established gaming subscription players like Apple Arcade and Google Play Pass, but with the added advantage of being available on both iOS and Android.

How Does Netflix Games Work?

Netflix Games can be accessed as standalone apps on the Apple App Store and Google Play Store, separate from the Netflix app. However, you can use the Netflix app on iOS or Android to discover games, which will redirect you to the respective app marketplace for download. Currently, the Netflix app does not allow you to play the games directly but serves as a discovery platform for titles of interest.

While the game apps themselves are free to download, an active Netflix subscription is required to access and play the games. If you are logged in to the Netflix app on the same device, this process seamlessly integrates the game with your existing credentials.

It is important to note that Netflix Games features fully unlocked premium games that can be played within the subscription service without any additional in-app purchases. This aligns with the subscription-based gaming services offered by Apple and Google, where the subscription cost covers all game content.

Currently, Netflix Games is limited to mobile platforms. However, the company has confirmed its development of a cloud gaming service that could expand game availability to a wider range of devices beyond smartphones and tablets. While this feature is still in progress, Netflix’s immediate focus remains on mobile platforms for gaming.
