Netflix Launches Game Controller App for iOS, Connects to TV Screens

Netflix has taken a step towards expanding its gaming offerings with the launch of the innovative ‘Netflix Game Controller’ app. This app acts as a touchscreen gamepad, complete with an analogue stick for movement and a set of action buttons for gameplay. While the app is currently only available for download on the Apple App Store, it appears that Netflix may have released it prematurely, as there has been no official announcement regarding its use or an Android release date. The product description simply states that it is ‘coming soon.’

According to Gizmodo, the app currently only prompts users to select a game and provides no further details on connectivity options. It is reasonable to assume that the app will connect to TVs via Wi-Fi or Bluetooth. In an interview with TechCrunch, Mike Verdu, Netflix Gaming VP, revealed that the company is exploring a ‘cloud gaming offering,’ with no intention of competing with major players like PlayStation or Xbox. Instead, the goal is to provide added value to subscribers. It remains unclear whether the games will run directly on the TV and use the phone as a controller, or if the app will allow for streaming of the phone screen onto the TV. This concept is somewhat similar to the Steam Link app, which mirrors a Steam window from a PC or laptop onto a mobile device with minimal latency.

Regardless, the launch of the Netflix Game Controller app is a positive development for Netflix subscribers, as it grants them exclusive access to mobile games. It should be noted, however, that sharing passwords with friends or family members who live elsewhere will still not be possible. In March, Netflix announced plans to release 40 new titles on its platform, leveraging its existing intellectual property (IP) catalog and collaborating with external partners such as Ubisoft and Super Evil Megacorp. Recent examples of this partnership include the mobile release of Raji: An Ancient Epic and The Queen’s Gambit Chess, inspired by the popular limited series starring Anya Taylor-Joy. Moreover, the Ubisoft collaboration has already brought Mighty Quest: Rogue Palace to mobile, with future plans for an Assassin’s Creed title as well.

It remains to be seen how these gaming additions will be received, especially in light of Netflix’s recent crackdown on password sharing. Secondary account holders affected by the crackdown will now be required to enter verification codes every 31 days, and their IP addresses will be tracked, resulting in automatic logouts. Despite this, the company reported a significant increase of 6 million new members during the second quarter, bringing their total subscriber count to 238 million. Earlier this year, Netflix also made a foray into the restaurant industry with an exclusive eatery in Los Angeles, featuring cuisine from its popular culinary programming.

At present, there is no information available regarding when Netflix will expand its gaming catalogue to TVs. The Netflix Game Controller app can currently be downloaded on iOS platforms.
