Netflix Implements Stricter Measures against Password Sharing

Netflix has made a major policy change by cracking down on password sharing. In the past, Netflix CEO Reed Hastings viewed account-sharing as a positive thing. However, the streaming giant is now requiring subscribers to set a “home address” for their account and charging an additional £4.99 per person who logs in from outside of that address.

This change comes as Netflix aims to retain subscribers who may be tempted to switch to other streaming platforms. Netflix offers a range of exclusive hit shows, including Stranger Things, The Witcher, Bridgerton, and The Crown. However, the platform also features syndicated shows like The IT Crowd, The Office, and Friends, which could potentially move to other platforms in the future.

While Netflix is tightening its policy on password sharing, competitors like Amazon Prime Video, Disney+, Sky, Apple TV Plus, and Paramount Plus still allow account-sharing and offer flexible subscription options. For example, Amazon Prime Video offers a 30-day free trial and subscriptions start at £5.99 per month. Disney+ allows streaming on four households with one subscription and offers content in up to 4K Ultra HD quality. Sky allows up to six devices under one account, while Apple TV Plus offers family-sharing with existing iCloud Family accounts. Paramount Plus allows two additional people to be added to a membership and supports streaming on three devices simultaneously.

Overall, the crackdown on password sharing by Netflix may drive subscribers to consider alternative streaming platforms that offer more flexibility and value for their money.
