Netflix Begins Testing Game Streaming on TVs, PCs, and Macs: Details

Netflix is taking its gaming efforts to the next level by testing game titles on a wider range of devices, including TVs and computers. The streaming platform announced that a limited number of subscribers in the US and Canada can now cloud-stream select games on their TVs, with testing on PC and Mac coming soon. The initial testing phase includes two games, Oxenfree and Molehew’s Mining Adventure, and utilizes the subscriber’s phone as a controller. Netflix unintentionally released their game controller app on the Apple App Store, fueling speculation about TV support for Netflix Games.

In a blog post, Mike Verdu, VP of Netflix Games, expressed the company’s dedication to delivering an exceptional gaming experience for its members. Netflix aims to provide a wide variety of games that are accessible, seamless, and available on every device where members enjoy the streaming service.

In addition to targeting password sharing, Netflix aims to enhance the member experience by offering free games as an added value. While expanding into cloud gaming last year, the company does not intend to directly compete with major gaming consoles like PlayStation or Xbox.

The game streaming feature is now confirmed for TVs, with control facilitated through the Netflix Game Controller app. The controller app functions as a touchscreen gamepad, featuring an analog stick for movement on the left side and action buttons on the right side. Initially, Netflix Games will be compatible with select TVs and connected TV devices, such as LG TVs, Amazon Fire TV, Roku, Nvidia Shield TV, Chromecast with Google TV, Samsung Smart TVs, and Walmart ONN. More devices will be supported in the future.

PC and Mac users will be able to play Netflix Games through the official website on select browsers, using a keyboard and mouse for controls. Any technical issues encountered during the testing phase will be addressed to ensure a smooth gaming experience, as the frustration of delays or glitches is more pronounced in gaming compared to streaming movies or shows.

The testing period currently includes two games: Molehew’s Mining Adventure, an arcade game centered around gem mining, and Oxenfree, a captivating supernatural thriller about a group of friends discovering a ghostly portal. Oxenfree was developed by Night School Studios, the first game developer acquired by Netflix in 2021 as part of its gaming content expansion. Netflix plans to introduce 40 new games on its platform this year, leveraging existing intellectual property and collaborating with external partners such as Ubisoft.

Netflix has not provided a specific timeline for when its game catalog will be available on TVs.
