Negan’s Brutal Habits Persist in TV Series ‘Dead City’

Please note that the following contains spoilers for Episode 2 of The Walking Dead: Dead City. This article explores the character development of Negan, played by Jeffrey Dean Morgan, in the latest episode.

In The Walking Dead, Negan’s storyline showcased his transformation from a violent individual to someone who cares for his family and regrets his past actions. However, in the most recent episode of The Walking Dead: Dead City, Negan commits a horrific act that raises questions about his progress.

In this episode, titled “Who’s There?”, Negan and Maggie, played by Lauren Cohan, encounter a group of struggling survivors in Manhattan. These survivors share a common enemy with Negan and Maggie – Zeljko Ivanek’s dangerous Croat, who used to be a member of Negan’s group, The Saviors.

As the Croat’s men raid the meager supplies of the defeated survivor group, Negan reverts to his old ways by brutally murdering one of them in front of the others. This act reminds us of his initial introduction as a violent antagonist. Maggie’s presence intensifies the scene as her own experiences with Negan’s violence resurface.

Negan’s use of violence to gain power is a recurring theme throughout his character arc. It sparks fear in those who pose a threat to him, and he does not hesitate to resort to needless violence. While he previously expressed remorse for his actions towards Maggie and others, the episode indicates that he has regressed, using violence to establish dominance over his Manhattan crew. This puts him in a dangerous position as the Croat’s men may seek revenge for his actions.

Despite his growth in previous seasons, Negan’s morality remains twisted. He sets his own rules and justifies his brutal decisions as necessary measures to protect his loved ones. While this justification may seem reasonable, it becomes clear that his acts often go too far. Maggie must grapple with his unhealthy relationship with violence and power.

The episode also reveals that Negan may not be as honest as he presents himself to be. His past with the Croat, which he reveals to Maggie, comes with secrets that put their mission and her son at risk. This lack of trustworthiness and the violent act further strain their already tense relationship. Negan’s facial expression when confronted by Maggie suggests a hint of regret, implying that there may be hope for him to change. However, he needs to confront his actions honestly if he wants to reconcile with Maggie.

The Walking Dead: Dead City continues to delve into the complexities of its main characters. Negan’s struggle with violence and power persists, while Maggie finds herself less trusting of him than before. The cycle of violence seems unending for Negan, but the series will undoubtedly test him and potentially strengthen his relationship with Maggie.

New episodes of The Walking Dead: Dead City premiere every Sunday on AMC.
