Naughty Dog Selects Its Next Game, Hinting at a Possible Departure from The Last of Us Part 3

Naughty Dog’s co-president, Neil Druckmann, has made a decision on his next game, but has not yet disclosed whether it will be a completely new intellectual property or The Last of Us Part 3. Following the successful reception of HBO’s The Last of Us series, it would be reasonable to assume that Sony Interactive Entertainment (SIE) would capitalize on the hype by creating a multimedia franchise. However, in an interview with Kinda Funny, Druckmann explained that the studio’s long-standing success has provided them with the freedom to pursue their passions rather than focusing solely on creating sequels. The director of The Last of Us Part II previously expressed satisfaction with the conclusive ending of that storyline.

Acknowledging the fans’ desire for The Last of Us Part 3, Druckmann stated in the interview, “I know the fans really want The Last of Us Part 3, I hear about it all the time. All I can say is that we’re already working on our next project. The decision has already been made, although I can’t reveal any details. We went through an extensive process of considering various ideas and ultimately chose the one that excited us the most.” Druckmann also shed light on Naughty Dog’s creative process, revealing that at the conclusion of each project, the team explores multiple ideas, including new IPs and sequels, to determine where their passions lie. As AAA game development can take up to four years, they are careful in selecting projects to avoid burnout and ensure excellence.

Druckmann emphasized that Naughty Dog’s upcoming title will be The Last of Us multiplayer game, and more information about it will be unveiled later this year. The game, which was announced during Geoff Keighley’s Summer Game Fest, will immerse players in the post-apocalyptic world of the series, offering a unique “brutal” experience with a new narrative and cast of characters set in a yet-unexplored city within The Last of Us universe. San Francisco is widely speculated to be the city, based on concept art. Notably, this will be the first project in the franchise where Druckmann is not the lead writer or director. He expressed excitement about other creative minds stepping into the world of The Last of Us, remarking, “What the team has put together is so cool. It’s very different from what I would do, but that’s part of the exciting thing about it, with other people playing in this world.”

Given director Druckmann’s previous confirmation that Naughty Dog has moved on from the Uncharted series, it is unlikely that their new project will be an Uncharted game. Uncharted 4: A Thief’s End, the highest-selling title in the franchise with over 15 million copies sold on the PS4, was followed by a spin-off sequel called Uncharted: The Lost Legacy, led by Chloe Frazer. Druckmann has also expressed interest in the minimalist storytelling style of Elden Ring, which he plans to experiment with in future projects. He stated, “To me, right now, that’s some of the best joy I get out of games that trust their audience to figure things out. [Games] that don’t hold your hand, that’s the stuff I’m really intrigued by going forward,” in an interview.

In other news related to The Last of Us, PlayStation is set to release The Last of Us Part I for PC on March 28. The PC version will include adjustable graphics options, support for ultra-wide displays, and compatibility with AMD and Nvidia’s upscaling methods to enhance frame rates without compromising visuals. Naughy Dog recently unveiled the system requirements and features for the PC release, but did not mention support for ray-tracing.
