Mutant Mayhem’ Global Box Office Slices Out Impressive Debut

The Big Picture

  • Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem has made an impressive start at the box office, earning a worldwide total of $51 million so far.
  • The film has been particularly successful in the United States and Canada, where it has grossed $43 million.
  • Paramount’s decision to create an animated installment instead of a live-action film seems to be paying off, as it aims to engage younger audiences.

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem has finally been released in theaters, and its debut at the worldwide box office brings in a comfortable total against its modest budget. The animated project has earned approximately $51 million from theaters around the world, providing a solid advantage as the summer movie season draws to a close. Of that total, $43 million came from the United States and Canada alone, even though the animated feature has only been released in 30% of its planned international territories. After numerous attempts to establish a live-action franchise with the intellectual property, Paramount is hoping to win over younger audiences with this animated installment, as the team battles evil mutants in an attempt to save the planet.

In Mutant Mayhem, the turtles are living their best lives, indulging in the finest pizza New York City has to offer, and striving to prevent crime before it even begins. However, despite the teachings of their mentor, Splinter (Jackie Chan), they are unprepared for the revolution that unfolds right on their doorstep. Superfly, the main antagonist voiced by Ice Cube, is fed up with how humans have treated mutants. His ideology leads him to believe that the only solution is for mutants to seize control of society, setting the stage for the film’s major battles.

Another highlight of the animated feature is its impressive and diverse voice cast, which brings the characters of Mutant Mayhem to life. Iconic franchise characters, Bebop and Rocksteady, are voiced by Seth Rogen and John Cena respectively, while Ayo Edebiri from The Bear portrays April O’Neil. The turtles themselves are brought to life by four talented young actors, lending authenticity to the “Teenage” aspect of TMNT. The journey of Raphael (Brady Noon), Leonardo (Nicolas Cantu), Donatello (Micah Abbey), and Michaelangelo (Shamon Brown Jr.) is just beginning.
