Musk: Elon Musk says X monthly users on a ‘new high’, rebranding comes to iPhones

In a surprising turn of events, Instagram’s Threads experienced a significant decline in active users. Despite garnering a staggering 100 million sign-ups in just one week, the platform struggled to maintain its user base. Meanwhile, its competitor Twitter celebrated a jump in monthly users. The social media giant, now known as X, reached a “new high” according to company owner Elon Musk. Musk shared a graph showing that X’s monthly user count had surpassed 541 million, even after removing a substantial number of bots. While traditional social media platforms typically report their ‘active’ monthly users, Musk’s announcement intriguingly left out this crucial detail.

In May 2022, Twitter announced having 229 million active monthly users. Just a few months prior, Musk claimed that X boasted 259.4 million daily active users.

Threads under ‘threat’?

These developments unfolded amidst growing concerns for the future of Threads. Recent reports indicate that the platform has struggled to retain its user base, experiencing a significant drop in daily active users from 49 million to 23.6 million within a two-week period. In response, Threads has been actively exploring new features, such as “retention-driving hooks,” to entice users and improve engagement. Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg acknowledged the decrease in active users but expressed optimism that retention rates would improve as the platform continues to introduce more features. “Obviously, if you have more than 100 million people sign up, ideally it would be awesome if all of them or even half of them stuck around. We’re not there yet,” he admitted.

‘X’ comes to iPhones

The surge in monthly users coincides with Twitter’s rebranding efforts for smartphones. The platform, which now goes by X, has updated its logo from the iconic blue bird to the letter ‘X’ on Android devices and iPhones. However, the app’s name remains as ‘Twitter’ on the App Store. This is due to Apple’s requirement for apps to have at least two letters in their names.
