The New Delhi Municipal Council (NDMC) plans to increase the number of EV charging stations in Lutyens’ Delhi and provide battery swapping facilities at selected points, according to a senior official on Wednesday. Delhi is among the world’s most polluted capitals, so the NDMC intends to promote electric vehicles to encourage people to use cleaner modes of transport. Currently, around 100 electric vehicle (EV) charging stations are available across the national capital. Swapping facilities will enable greater accessibility, save time and promote EV use. Several public sector units (PSUs) have approached the NDMC to provide public charging stations, including Rajasthan Electronics and Instruments Limited (REIL) and Kerala State Electronics Development Corporation Limited (KELTRON).
The demand for electric vehicles is expected to rise as petrol and diesel prices increase. Battery swapping involves exchanging discharged batteries for pre-charged ones, reducing the cost of the vehicles. A charging station policy is to be prepared, prioritising high-traffic areas for installation. The total number of charging stations, the mode of allotment and location will be decided on a time-bound basis. The proposal is part of Thursday’s council meeting agenda.
