Modder transforms Half-Life into a Roguelike game

Half-Life remade as a roguelike, approved by Valve, and playable now

The long wait for the third installment of the beloved Half-Life franchise seems almost impossible to end. However, there are still ways to enjoy the adventures of Gordon Freeman. Modder PinkyDev is developing a modification called Codename: Loop, which will turn Valve’s iconic FPS into a roguelike shooter.

The demo for Codename: Loop has just been released, and a video showcasing the Half-Life fan project is available on ModDB. With its new top-down, isometric look, you control mute scientist Gordon Freeman as he battles his way through invading Xen aliens. While PinkyDev has yet to write the plot, the general story will involve G-Man confining Freeman to “an ever-changing loop” to test his skills. Check out the video below to see it in action:

The release date for when Codename: Loop will be fully launched is still unknown. The modder has decided not to include “Half-Life” in the title in order to differentiate it from other fan-made or official games on Steam. Interestingly, this mod has been approved by Valve and will be available on Steam. This move shows Valve’s dedication towards the modding community and is a sign of their support for fan-made projects.

While Half-Life 2, released in 2004, is widely considered one of Valve’s best games, the impact of the original Half-Life cannot be ignored. More fan-created content, such as the unofficial Half-Life remake Black Mesa, continue to keep the legacy of the series alive by offering new experiences for fans.
